The interesting thing about a tree is that it grows simultaneously in two completely different directions.

Up and down. It is both phototropic and gravitropic in nature.

From a seed, it works with gravity to search deep and form a strong foundational root system.  Once this happens, it then finds the strength to work against gravity to push up and fight through the dirt to the surface where it eventually breaks through and becomes young, eager fresh roots. From here on in, there is less resistance energetically but it is now reliant on its environment. Just like us really.

From the moment we are born we need sunlight for hormonal production, circadian rhythms and life, just like these little seedlings.  However, unlike the tree who knows that its root system mirrors its fruit system we tend to ignore, conceal and bury the dark hidden parts of us.

Perhaps this is why trees grow so wonderfully old and aging is such a big, scary ordeal to us. You don’t see the tree hanging onto its spring blossom each season because it makes them young and beautiful or not allow its fruit to ripen and fall in case it needs it later.  You don’t see it gripping hold of its glossy leaves because its naked branches fear exposure. It adapts to the season, it takes only what it needs and everything else, it gives back to create new possibilities.  It understands what it must sustain and surrender in order to slowly and gracefully grow and evolve.

This is what we do at the Fig Tree Clinic.  We take care of the roots. We learn to work with our natural rhythms and environments, listening deep into our innate intelligence, rooting and grounding the body.  Then, when we are ready, we delve into the darkness understanding that the work we do in the shadows, when no one is watching, with all that resistance and struggle, heaviness and darkness is actually the thing that creates a fruitful and abundant life.  The visible part, the resilience, the fertility, the strength, the wonder are all just byproducts and once we learn to love and embrace all parts of ourselves - well – these will just happen naturally with grace and ease and flow.

We hope you enjoy our offerings. Please visit our sister site Fig Tree Ayurveda for more information about one-to-one consultations or group collaborations.

Why I created

I first began yoga in my early twenties at the local community hall.  My teacher was an elegant older lady, possibly in her sixties.  She was a woman of few words but the ones she had resonated.  I remember my first savasana; she lifted my head and pulled it away from my feet.  I didn’t realise until then that my spine did that.  I think that was my first real connection with the inside of my body.

She eventually retired and I moved away. I tried various classes over the next decade but never felt that feeling again.   My new classes were more like gymnastics, all about getting into exotic poses in expensive Lycra, fast-paced chaturangas, creating shapes and bending and balancing.  As a child I was a good dancer and gymnast and so I enjoyed it all and I liked the competition and speed of the class.

Then one day, I found a wonderful teacher who would eventually change my outlook entirely.  Her love for yoga, in all its forms, was contiguous and she shared her understanding and curiosity generously.  This wonderful soul has since sadly passed but her legacy lives on in all the current yoga teachers I know.  She sparked our fuel to teach and we all remember her with love, thanks and appreciation.

I had been practising Ayurveda and yoga for many years before it dawned on me what I was really working towards in life and it wasn’t until my Light Language Activation that it all came together.

It wasn’t a light bulb moment as some say they have.  The Light Language  happened slowly over time.  First, I would stub my toe and it came out instead of the usual swear word, then I would start randomly talking to the dog and even more randomly she would seem to understand.   Then it would come during my dreams and I would wake with the interpretation, a premonition and/or often a perfectly obvious answer to anything that had previously been puzzling me.  Then I was ‘told’ to take the practice into nature where it exploded.  All this sounds very odd to you reading this no doubt, but it was even odder to me.  I had never disbelieved in ‘Woo-Woo’ but had definitely never thought that I would eventually be in Woo-Woo land myself.  It took some time to come to grips with it all.

In my careful ayurvedic practice, I only dispense herbs once I know them well, often trying them myself for their effect.  I must understand where they come from, how they affect different people at different seasons, times of life and so on before I feel that I can ever confidently suggest them to a client.  I do the same with my yoga.   This is the way I learn. So, I knew I must do the same with this new Light Language activation.

I sat with this new ‘thing’ for a couple of years.  Exploring what it was, why it happened and why despite my best efforts in the early days it just kept coming. Sometimes embarrassingly so and without warning and in public. It took a long time before I found out how to control the on/off switch.

Now I understand that this time was necessary for my own journey.  The codes, that seemed to come from our sun, were for me alone to build a new internal hard drive, to download a new manual and to learn to be comfortable in own body and mind - despite my age, shape and weight which had always been my biggest struggle.  I needed to embody the fact that none of this is important.  Only then could I act as a vessel.

Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t cracked it all! I’m still a work in progress.  Life throws stuff this way and that all the time. But now I feel I have the capability and reasoning to deal with it easily.  Information seems to have been pre-downloaded into me through the codes, a bit like a new accessible library, a way of knowing without reading the books and a new way of thinking.  Different from before.  Easier and more in context.

Prior to this, I triggered easily and although it probably didn’t seem like it on the outside, on the inside I struggled with almost everything about me.  I used to believe that a good yoga teacher should be able to recite every Sanskrit term in a soft wispy, spiritual voice.  Be beautiful, calm, serene and as skinny as a rake.  I thought the best students were disciplined and committed and the only way to learn was through continued focused study and practice. Now I realise that that’s all rubbish.  We are all innately good people.  We are all also naturally good yogis and meditators.  We have just been so preconditioned, judged and pigeon-holed by our families, friends, schooling, work and social environments that we never really give ourselves the opportunity to see our own absolute perfection.

I realise now that enlightenment isn't an accumulation of knowledge and experiences, it's simply an awakening to our true, raw and honest self.

How do we do this though? A monk may shut himself away from worldly distractions to learn to find the ultimate truth and inner peace but very few people can afford to go live in a cave to find enlightenment, it must be done right here.  In this busy world full of distractions, with its time and financial constraints and constant interaction and interruption from other people.

I used to think that this was bad but it’s not, it’s the fastest way to learn about ourselves. Every interaction is an opportunity to learn.  Every person that triggers you, every piece of good or bad luck and every single situation that crops up is purely a reflection of what we are putting out there.  It is a projection structure of the mind filtered through our biases and past traumas.  Our ego traps us in a cycle of desire and attachment and until we learn to stop, wait and witness this, it’s a difficult trap to escape. But, we are here to learn and the best way to do it is to get stuck into the game.

To create time and space for this is difficult and after seeing so many clients I know that for a woman, it always seems especially hard.  Many feel it self-indulgent to spend so much time searching.  To spend time in meditation, or reflection or long poses and savasana when there’s so much housework, family responsibility and/or a job to get to.

This is why I created PranaLumen Yoga.  It has all the ingredients needed to find space, relax and enjoy the search. It can be experienced in quick, easy to follow, episodes that can be savoured whenever a spare half hour crops up.  No big commitment, no expensive equipment and best of all it’s totally free!

For those of you who may think, ‘I can’t get into those positions!’   I especially invite you to join us.  Find somewhere comfortable, sit and simply visualise yourself in these shapes.  Without judgement. Use bolsters, cushions, chairs, sofas and whatever else you need to imagine yourselves soaking into these seemingly impossible positions.  Submerge yourself into the imagination and witness what happens when you allow the mind to step out of the way, activate the power of your own body intelligence and explore the inner wonder of your higher self.

I really hope you manage to try a few episodes and always welcome your thoughts and feedback.  Enjoy!
